Ingrown toenails usually occur on either side of your big toe and can be very painful. The sides will usually become red and swollen and possibly infected.

Ingrown nails are caused when the edge of a toenail curls over and grows into the skin of the toe. This can cause pain, swelling and infection so proper treatment is paramount.
Initially, a small section of the nail may be cut out to allow the wound to heal. Once the toe is healed, another procedure is needed to remove a small slice of the toenail, under anaesthetic. A treatment will then be applied to the nail bed to stop this part of the nail growing back, therefore reducing the width of the nail and preventing it growing into the skin again
